A walk from 🏖️ Roseisle Beach Car Park to ⛵ Findhorn and back
A wonderful walk at low tide. Park at the Roseisle Beach car park and walk along the beach to Findhorn. Have something to eat in Findhorn or simply sit on the beach. Then walk back, this time along the forest paths. The Roseisle car park sits deep in the woods. There are toilet facilities. The car park is paid (there is a barrier on site). Payment is often possible by card or coins. Sarah loves this kind of walk. Note: one way takes 2 to 2.25 hours, so allow enough time. The route is mostly flat, but walking in the sand tires you out more quickly.

🧚 An Lochan Uaine (Green Loch)
One of my favourite places, right near Grantown-on-Spey. A wild yet gentle and varied nature trail leads up to the famous Green Loch. When the sun shines on the water, the loch looks like a giant emerald. There are two different circular routes, which makes the outing even lovelier. One leads up through the forest, the other runs back along a wild mountain burn, or of course the other way round. You can park at Loch Morlich or about 500 metres further towards the Cairngorm Funicular on the right-hand side. I personally avoid the weekends, as it is often very busy then. During the week I can enjoy the scenery, the peace and the nature far more.

Grantown on Spey, Nigg Ferry to 🏰 Dunrobin Castle
I'm fascinated by the view of the open sea from Dunrobin Castle. Here I can daydream and imagine what it must have been like back then. The garden is beautiful, especially in May and June when much is already in bloom. You can also walk to the right past Dunrobin and stroll along the North Sea, while the majestic Dunrobin watches over the coast. From this angle you get wonderful photos ;-)

🛢️ Speyside Cooperage ein tolles Handwerk
Without casks there is no whisky. All too often this wonderful craft is overlooked. The hard, precise and hugely important work done at the Cooperage impresses me greatly. I love taking my guests to the Cooperage again and again. I can recommend it even to those who aren't whisky fans.

⛰️ Glen Lyon - a name for liberty!
I could spend far more time here, and often do. The glen is beautiful, but also rugged and unspoilt. The River Lyon is wild and impressive. I love driving to the Glen Lyon Tea Room (PH15 2PP) and taking a break there. In Glen Lyon you can drive as far as Lubreoch Dam and hike from there. You can also drive towards Lawers Dam, enjoy the view and experience the silence of the mountains. Glen Lyon has many hidden spots waiting to be discovered ;-) But BEWARE: you need good footwear here and ideally a vehicle with good ground clearance. A spare tyre is also recommended. Help is not just around the corner.

🥾 Portknockie to Cullen Coastal Walk
Park at the Bow Fiddle Rock Viewpoint car park (AB56 4NN) and begin your walk from there.

Before reaching the car park, it's worth stopping at Café Rustico (AB56 4DY) for a coffee, a delicious pistachio croissant, and a convenient toilet break.

After just a 3-minute walk, you'll arrive at the spectacular Bow Fiddle Rock, one of Scotland's most iconic natural sea arches.

From here, follow the coastal path over the rocky headlands, enjoying breathtaking views across the Moray Firth. The walk is easy and wonderfully peaceful, accompanied by the sound of the waves and the fresh sea air. After around 30 minutes, you'll reach the beautiful sandy beach at Cullen.

Here you can relax on the beach, enjoy a picnic, or simply retrace your steps. If you'd like to explore a little further, continue for another 30 minutes into the charming fishing town of Cullen, where you'll find cafés, independent shops, and the home of the famous Cullen Skink.

This is one of those walks I could happily do every single day. Every season has its own charm, and the ever-changing light makes each visit feel a little different.

If you're lucky, keep an eye on the sea — you may even spot dolphins, as the Moray Firth is one of the best places in Scotland to see them in the wild.

One final tip: Don't underestimate the wind! It often rules this stretch of coastline, so a windproof jacket is highly recommended, even on sunny days.

Loch Ruthven is a remote and peaceful loch in the hills south of Inverness. Formed at the end of the last Ice Age, it now lies nestled in a beautiful landscape of moorland and heather. Loch Ruthven is one of the best places in Britain to watch the rare Slavonian Grebe.

🪨 Bow Fiddle Rock Viewpoint
Bow Fiddle Rock was formed by the interplay of tectonic plate movements and coastal erosion. During the Caledonian mountain-building, when the ancient continents of Laurentia and Avalonia collided, the rock layers were folded and tilted. Over millions of years the sea eroded the softer layers of the Cullen Quartzite formation, shaping the famous natural sea arch known today as Bow Fiddle Rock. Bow Fiddle Rock is also an important seabird sanctuary. Its rocky ledges provide vital nesting sites for fulmars, kittiwakes, razorbills, guillemots, shags and various species of gull.

There are rumours that Walt Disney drew inspiration from this castle for the film Cinderella, though this has never been confirmed. In any case, it is well worth a visit. It is also lovely for a walk, as Craigievar is surrounded by woodland. We recommend a route straight through the Cairngorms over the Snow Roads and the return via the A941 and Dufftown. A day trip that combines well with Braemar or Castle Fraser, Ballater or the Muir of Dinnet nature reserve. On the way there or back you can stop at the Pictish Maiden Stone.

⛪ Pluscarden Abbey
Founded in 1230, Pluscarden Abbey is one of the few medieval monasteries in Britain still home to a community of monks. Visitors are welcome to attend services and experience a centuries-old monastic tradition. One way, drive the Dava A940, then turn right towards Dallas Dhu, a historic distillery, and continue on the B9010 back towards Grantown. Alternatively, you can take the road to Bridge of Lossie on the B9010 and continue via Upper Knockando, then turn onto the B9102 towards Tulchan Estates and Grantown-on-Spey.

🧭 Getting to Grantown-on-Spey

🚗 Arriving by your own car

Ferry Amsterdam–Newcastle. From there you can either drive straight up to Grantown-on-Spey, or make a stopover in Stirling or Queensferry — ideal for parking outside Edinburgh and then taking public transport into Edinburgh and/or Glasgow. Alternatively, you can stay in the Stonehaven area; an example is included in the 'The Way to Grantown' button. The journey from Newcastle to Grantown can already be the first adventure and experience.

🚆 Arriving by train

You can travel from various cities in Europe and Switzerland. For example, take the train in Olten or Basel to Paris, then Paris to London and London to Aviemore, where a pick-up and drop-off service is available on request. From Aviemore you can also easily reach Grantown by one of the local taxis or by bus. If you have more time, Edinburgh makes an excellent stopover for a few nights.

In Grantown-on-Spey, we highly recommend Mortimers. They stock a great selection of high-quality outdoor clothing, walking boots and equipment, and their knowledgeable staff are always happy to offer advice. Mortimers has been serving outdoor and fishing enthusiasts in Speyside for over 50 years. If you're looking for good value, Mountain Warehouse Aviemore is another excellent option, offering a wide range of outdoor clothing and equipment at very competitive prices.
Why is Grantown-on-Spey such a good base for exploring the Highlands?
Grantown sits in the centre of multiple regions. Guests can easily make star-shaped day trips into Speyside, the Cairngorms, Moray Coast, Inverness area, Strathspey and Aberdeenshire. Many highlights are reachable within 20–50 minutes. Every day can offer completely different scenery and experiences.
How far is Inverness from Grantown-on-Spey?
Approximately 52 minutes by car. You can reach Inverness either via Nairn or via the A9. Public transport is also available — regular buses connect Grantown-on-Spey and Inverness.
What shouldn't you miss in the region?
If time is limited, we recommend combining Inverness, Loch Ness and Speyside. This gives you the historic Highland capital, the famous Loch Ness landscape and the world-famous whisky region of Speyside — a perfect mix of culture, nature and history.
Is Nairn worth a visit?
Absolutely. Nairn has one of the finest sandy beaches in the region, a pleasant promenade and several cosy cafés. On a clear day the views across the Moray Firth are spectacular, and with a little luck you might even spot dolphins from the shore.

Who knows? That wasn't very funny, was it? 😉 The truth is nobody can answer that question. Scotland has more than 140 distilleries and everyone has different tastes. You may love a smoky island whisky or perhaps you are completely new to whisky. If so, Speyside is one of the best places to begin. Do you have EV charging?
Yes. Garden Park Guest House has an EV charging station located in the car park. Guests can activate it easily using the relevant charging app. The charger has been in use since 2022.
Can we walk to restaurants and shops?
Yes. Garden Park is located in a quiet side street. The town centre is approximately 2 minutes away on foot. All restaurants can be reached within 1–10 minutes walking distance. Several are less than 4 minutes away.
Do you offer vegan breakfast options?
Yes. Fresh vegetarian and vegan options are available every day.
How far is the River Spey?
Approximately 7–9 minutes on foot. The walk leads through beautiful Anagach Woods — home to red squirrels, deer and a variety of woodland birds.
Can we complete the Speyside Malt Whisky Trail in one day?
Of course you can do the Speyside Malt Whisky Trail in one day. The real question is: will you remember it the next day? 😄 With so many distilleries, visitor centres and tastings, time flies. Our advice: visit fewer distilleries and enjoy each one more. Daniel also offers a driver service for up to 4 people on request. As dates fill up quickly, especially in peak season, booking at least 6 weeks in advance is recommended.
Are dolphins really visible from the Moray coast?
Yes, really — and they have never charged an entry fee! The best location is Chanonry Point near Fortrose, where Bottlenose Dolphins are regularly spotted, especially 1.5–2 hours after low tide. Bring binoculars and be patient — the reward is worth it.
Where can I find the official government website to apply for a UK ETA?
To avoid third-party scam sites or unnecessary extra processing fees, you should only apply through official UK government channels. You have two options: apply online directly on the official UK government website at gov.uk/eta/apply, or use the official 'UK ETA' app (Apple App Store and Google Play Store), which lets you easily scan your passport's biometric chip and your face. Important: the official UK ETA application costs £20. Always check that the website address ends exactly in .gov.uk — independent websites often look identical to official government pages but charge large hidden fees on top of the standard rate.
Can you pour whisky straight from the tap here?
We did ask, but the distilleries thought the idea was a little too generous. 😉 The good news is that Speyside is practically on the doorstep — with world-famous distilleries such as Glenfiddich, Macallan and Aberlour. A distillery tour is worthwhile even for guests who don't normally drink whisky.
Where does the Highlands wilderness actually begin?
Roughly where your phone decides it has done enough work for the day. 😄 In truth, from here you are quickly among some of the finest landscapes in the Highlands. Around Inverness, the Cairngorms National Park and the Moray coast, walking trails, viewpoints and plenty of fresh air await.
